Designed by Benjamin Douglas Thomas, it first flew in June 1917 as an advanced trainer for the Thomas Morse Aircraft Company in Ithaca, New York. It had a long and varied career and over 550 were built for the U. S. Signal Corps by 1918, training pilots for combat. Post war, it served civilian schools and
